The ELTO service has been introduced by the insurance industry to make it easier to search for Employers Liability insurance policies using a central database – containing all new and renewed Employers Liability insurance policies from 1st April 2011, policies from before 1st April 2011 that have new claims made against them and policies that were identified through the previous tracing service (Employers’ Liability Code of Practice (ELCOP) tracing service).

For policies incepting or renewing on or after 1st April 2012 ELTO member insurers will have to provide mandatory information including the Employers Reference Number (ERN) for both the policyholder and any subsidiary company insured by the same policy

The Employer Reference Number (ERN) also commonly referred to as ‘Employer PAYE Reference’ will serve as a unique identifier for the insured client organisation. UK businesses employing one or more people are required to have the ERN, which is the reference number for their employees’ income tax and national insurance contributions. The only exemption is where the employer pays all their employees below the PAYE threshold (£503.00 monthly). It is a requirement to capture information about every subsidiary company that is to be covered by the policy.
